  • What does learning look like at acton?

It Looks Like The Students Are Running The School

    Learning To Do

Changing the world requires skills and hard work and lots of failing: At Acton Academy, it is our duty to help our heroes find their passion and pursue their talents with real life experiences. These skills mastered are translated into action with a product being sold, a project being presented or a solution being pitched in every six weeks. We call it a Quest.

    Learning To Be

We ask our heroes: Are you performing at the highest standard of excellence? Are you becoming a better person? Is the hard work being translated in a virtuous character?

    Learning To Learn

The world is changing at an accelerated pace. The workforce isn’t static anymore, with many careers that will be created in the next 10 years don’t even exist yet. We want our future generations to be flexible and adaptable, knowing that anything is learnable.

    Learning To Know

In a world where accumulating knowledge becomes less valuable (where anything is searchable). Instead of memorization and facts with multiple choice, at Acton critical thinking promotes a clear “why?” with what we call this Socratic discussion launches. Learning is a journey: We want our heroes to think outside the box, to be curators of content and problem-solvers that lead an inspiring and creative life.

    Life Skills

While intentionally cultivating a growth mindset, we challenge our students with opportunities to develop necessary hard and soft skills.

    Arts

In cherishing the arts, we encourage our learners to foster their individual desire for creative expression.

    Physical Education

In addition to daily time outdoors, we offer physical activity exploring a mind body connection and physical wellness.

    Studio Agreements

Written covenants that form a tightly-bound community of individuals learning to form authentic friendships and resolve interpersonal problems.

    Measuring Mastery

Learners celebrate the mastery of tools, skills and character by earning badges, assembling portfolios and taking part in public exhibitions.

What does a typical day look like at Acton?

There is no such thing as a "typical" day at Acton Academy Fort Lauderdale, but you will always find learning, FUN, and innovation in the studio. We structure our day with three main blocks of time.

    Morning:

We come together each morning for a launch to reconnect and set the tone for the day. Learners then break off to work toward their S.M.A.R.T goals for core skills, followed by recess.

    Afternoon:

Learners regroup in the studio and work together on Quests. They create their own businesses, produce plays, publish books, develop video games, and more. Through these hands-on projects, learners discover and develop their unique talents and passions.

    Rotating Focus Areas:

Each day, time is provided for either physical education, art, music, or science.

    We believe that:

    • Clear thinking leads to good decisions,
    • Good decisions lead to the effective habits,
    • The right habits lead to strong character traits and,
    • Your character determines impact on the world.
We also know that employers want this kind of independent and capable thinker on their teams, more than college degrees.

What makes Acton Academy so different?

    1. Acton Academy uses the latest technology in a self-paced learning environment designed to foster responsibility, goal-setting, and teamwork. Acton students are empowered to thrive in a world that needs independent, motivated thinkers and learners.
    2. We believe children learn best by doing. Whether it’s launching a startup business, creating a tidepool habitat, playing a musical instrument, painting a mosaic, or programming a robot, Acton students are building real-life skills in the classroom every day.
    3. We believe the learning experience is much richer when the Guide offers insightful questions and facilitates hands on learning. Guides use the Socratic method, always responding to students’ questions with new questions. This exchange hones students’ critical thinking skills.
    4. Acton Academy is “student led.” This means young people take ownership of their education and peer relationships. Acton students learn to think independently, take responsibility and embrace challenge. They are being prepared to bring their own unique genius to the world.
    5. We believe in the power of apprenticeships. Beginning in Agora, our students have apprenticeships in a field they are passionate about. Acton students have interned with doctors, entrepreneur bakers, plumbers, attorneys and graphic designers. What will your child choose?
    6. We encourage our students to develop honesty, hard work, responsibility, kindness and empathy. Armed with purpose and good character, we believe our students will launch into adulthood prepared to find their own calling and change the world.
